Sinéad McCartan - Curator of Prehistoric Antiquities

Prehistoric archaeology, including the Mesolithic, Neolithic, Bronze Age and Iron Age

Biography

Sinéad McCartan has been the Curator of Prehistoric Antiquities since 1990.

Her expertise and research interests include lithic studies and the Mesolithic period in Ireland and the Isle of Man.  She is a Fellow of the Society of Antiquaries, an Associate of the Institute of Field Archaeologists and a member of the Institute of Archaeologists of Ireland.  She has been a council or committee member for a number of well-known societies and currently sits on the Committee for Archaeology (Royal Irish Academy) and the Archaeology Standing Committee (The Heritage Council).

Her two main fieldwork projects include assessing the Mesolithic settlement of Rathlin Island and adjacent areas, and a survey of shell midden and lithic sites around Ardmillan Bay, Strangford Lough, County Down.
