The Living Sea
In the dark
we waited,
listening to the taped Belfast voice
of a man carefully enunciating
his high and low tide script
about the strange and moving sea.
At intervals in time with the script
a panel is lit to reveal
the next icon of the sea: -
seagull
seaweed
giant squid.
At four
my daughter is still entranced
by a giant plastic turtle
(paint flaking from his plastic shell),
still engaged by the story she has heard
six times before.
As our eyes grow used
to seeing less
we notice that
we are alone. Today
no-one else
Is watching the sea show.
And when the music indicates
the end of todays salty tale,
my wee dote
Jumps to her feet
and jigs with fizz,
spinning and laughing appreciation.
