Francis Hewlett, born England 1930
TRAVELLING LIGHT 1973
Stoneware
Francis Hewlett originally trained as a painter before starting to work in ceramics in 1964. He saw clay as a immediate medium for sculpture like the use of paint on a canvas. With clay he could rapidly create large sculptural forms based on his observation of everyday things. By the exaggeration of size Hewlett achieves a sense of humour in his pieces. This enormous suitcase (over a metre high) with cats has put a smile on many a visitor's face when seeing it for the first time. It is quite an incredible feat of manufacture to have created a sculpture so large from very heavy stoneware clay and fired in the kiln without any cracks happening to the piece.
