
Anti-Slavery Medal
This white metal anti-slavery medal, made by Davis, Birmingham, is from the collections of Armagh County Museum.
The obverse (shown here) shows a slave freed from his shackles, with the inscription, This is the Lord’s doing, it is marvellous in our eyes, Psalm 118, v.3/Jubilee, Augt. 1831.
The reverse has the inscription, In Commemoration of the extinction of Colonial Slavery throughout the British Dominions in the reign of William IV Aug. 1 1834.
The medal can be seen in an exhibition, Hidden Connections: the relationship between Northern Ireland, the slave trade and the Abolitionist movement of the late 18th and early 19th centuries, along with other objects and documents from the collections of the Public Record Office of Northern Ireland, the National Museums Northern Ireland and the Linen Hall Library.
The exhibition is on tour in Northern Ireland from September 2007 until March 2008.
