The Venice Chair
David West, 1986
Carved and stained sycamore
David West studied painting and print making at Camberwell School of Art before exploring wood as a three dimensional medium.
The inspiration for the Venic eChair came from West's fascination with the theme of travel, in particular the Grand Tour. Detailed drawings of Venetian architecture were the starting point for this series of furniture made from carved and stained wood.
The Venice Chair exudes the spirit of Venice - its upright supports topped by minarets suggest the mooring poles of the gondolas, the arms are the mooring ropes and the chair back a beautifully carved Venetian view.
