Side Table, c.1745, Irish, Mahogany, Edwin Henry Shaw BequestIrish Furniture Collection

The collection has some very fine and important examples of Irish cabinet making of the 18th century. As well as carved early mahogany pieces there are later 18th century examples of the neo-classical style, including a side table by William Moore. Another significant example is a mirror dating from 1760 by Francis and John Booker of Dublin.

Irish manufactured furniture displays some characteristics that are well represented in this magnificent side table. The more formal style of English carving was embellished by the typical Irish feature of the grotesque mask. Here a lion mask has been included on the front apron of the table and other masks carved on the knees of the cabriole legs. Another distinguishing Irish feature present on the table is the carved square paw feet.
