Downpatrick HoardBronze Age gold

Gold was a symbol of power and wealth during the Bronze Age and used for personal ornaments and jewellery.  The most striking Early Bronze age ornaments are the lunula of which the museum has several fine examples.

More intricate and different types of ornaments were made during the Late Bronze Age including torcs, dress and sleeve fasteners and collars.  Gold objects are often found in hoards and the hoard in the museum's collections from Downpatrick, County Down is a very fine example.
