Northern Emerald Somatochlora arctica. This dragonfly (the rarest in Ireland) is only found in a small area of Killarney National Park, Co.Kerry. Museum staff have been involved in surveys of the species and its habitat and provided advice on how to conserve this isolated population

This massive resource is cared for and studied by staff of the Sciences Division's Department of Zoology. Recent and ongoing research projects include:

- wood white butterflies
- surveys of wetland insects
- checklists of all the insect species in Ireland
- distribution of dragonflies
- Red Data Books on Irish bees and water beetles
- Species of Conservation Concern
