Giant SquidThe Giant Squid

My parents took us to the museum at least once a month throughout the 1980s and 1990s.  We were always scared of the squid in the living sea so it was a must!

Of course we would spend ages peering in at the mummy, I was always amazed at how her hair had survived for so long!

We would go to education activity days for kids and once even I won a £5 shop voucher, I was delighted!  I bought a piece of meteorite which I still have somewhere.

What I loved most about the museum was how it had so many different sections that were all so distinct from one another: the darkened hall of the fuorescent mineral gallery, the spacious natural history displays, the bright, high ceilings of the dinosaur exhibition. The twists and turns and the multitude of levels made it such as exciting place to explore with something new around each corner.

I always hoped to bring my children to the museum I remember and I was saddened at first to hear of the renovation project.  But time cannot stand still.  My parents loved the museum of their childhood, I loved the museum of mine and I'm sure that my children will love the new museum that is being created for them.
